Understanding Skin Types
Understanding your skin type can help you to select the Calvert Creak product that best suits you.
Normal Skin
Normal skin has a smooth texture and is evenly-toned with very small pores. This skin type has a balanced oil and water content and feels “smooth and velvety”. It has no apparent oily or dry regions.
Looking after normal skin involves helping the skin to remain “normal” by regularly cleansing, toning and moisturising.
Oily Skin
Oily skin generally appears “shiny” with no dry areas. This skin type is caused by overactive oil-producing (sebaceous) glands, which cause the face to appear shiny (especially on the chin, nose, and forehead). People with oily skin often have enlarged pores, making their skin more prone to blackheads, pimples and acne.
Oily skin requires special attention to cleansing in order to keep the pores unclogged. People with oily skin need to adopt a daily proper method of cleansing to prevent accumulation of dirt on the skin surface.
Dry Skin
Dry skin is lacking in both sebum (oil) and moisture (water). To the outside world it appears fine textured, transparent, fragile and patchy. Dry skin flakes and chaps often compared with other skin types. Expression lines may be more obvious. People with dry skin often have flaky patches that resolve with proper moisturising.
Dry skin requires special attention to moisturising, and avoidance of harsh soaps and detergents to prevent the loss of natural oils from the skin. Exposure to the sun and air-conditioners also contribute to further depletion of dry skin’s much-needed water content.
Combination Skin
Combination skin involves both dry skin and oily skin occurring on separate areas of the face. Often the skin is oily on the nose, forehead and chin, and dry on the cheeks.
Combination skin requires area-specific treatment for the varying dry and oily areas.
Factors that Influence Your Skin Type
Outside factors are important factors in the way your skin looks and feels. You need to consider that the following factors may influence your skin type:
- Hormonal changes that occur during pregnancy, menopause and the menstrual cycle.
- Other skin problems such as rosacea or psoriasis.
- Other non-skin-related health problems such as hypothyroidism (which can cause dry skin).
- Hereditary (genetic ) factors
- Pharmaceutical medications you may be taking
- Smoking
- Climate – cold vs. warm, humid vs. dry
- Sunlight exposure
- Age
- The chemicals in the skin care products you are using
Skin Type Variability
Many people assume that their skin type will remain the same forever. This is not always the case. Some people’s skin type changes with the season of the year, with age, stress, changed skin care regime and other factors.
