Essential Oils are powerful, highly aromatic, natural plant extracts with beneficial properties that assist in the treatment of common ailments.

 

Medicinal Care

 

Lavender Oil is well known for its antiseptic healing abilities when applied to minor wounds, cuts and burns and with outstanding antimicrobial properties, Lavender oil is excellent in application for many fungal and bacterial infections. Lavender oil may also be beneficial in the treatment of acne as it inhibits the bacteria that causes the initial infection, helps regulate the production of sebum and assists in the healing process. Stress and acne are believed to be connected, so using Lavender, even just for its therapeutic impact will promote an enhanced effect on both these issues. Inflammatory skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis may also benefit from the use of Lavender Oil as antioxidant characteristics soothe and nourish the skin and the calmative effects also reduce tension that may be allied with flair-ups.

 

Add a DIY first aid salve to your remedy cabinet by combining 10drops of lavender oil to 30g (1tablespoon) coconut oil for topical use.

 

Lavender oil may be used as a vapour or applied to the skin of the neck, chest and back to aid with the relief of congestion associated with respiratory conditions and to loosen up the associated phlegm. Lavender oil may help alleviate the symptoms of hay fever by rubbing a drop of oil between the palms and inhaling deeply.

 

With lavender oils’ antibacterial and antiviral properties it is suggested that with regular use, it may provide resistance to a variety of diseases. In addition, its soothing attributes shows beneficial effects on circulation; increasing levels of oxygenation, promoting muscle strength and health, boosting brain activity and increasing blood flow to the skin

 

Lavender essential oil is a definite top 5 contender for inclusion in the homes’ support kit. Lavender oil is safe and effective, however as with all essential oils, less is always best; 1–3 drops on the skin would be sufficient. Applying pure undiluted lavender oil intermittently is generally considered safe for most adults; however a patch test is recommended before initial use, apply a drop of lavender oil to the inside of the arm and check for a reaction.

 

To sooth the worst sunburn and bring rapid healing to dry skin, minor cuts and scraps; add 10 drops of pure lavender oil to 30g of aloe vera or a carrier oil. ( draxe.com )

 

Around the home

 

Scent the house via diffuser, oil burner, pot pourri; inspire the imagination!!

 

The smell of lavender oil is an effective deterrent for many annoying insects. Apply lavender oil to exposed skin to reduce the assault of irritating mosquitoes & midges. Apply a drop of lavender oil on an insect bite or sting; as the anti-inflammatory properties will reduce itching and associated swelling.

 

Lavender oil aids with foot odour by infusing shoes.

 

Use as a natural, toxic-free air freshener. Add 20 drops of lavender oil to apple cider vinegar in a small spray bottle to neutralize pet odour.

 

Make a carpet freshener by adding lavender oil to bicarbonate of soda and sprinkling onto carpet 15 minutes before vacuuming.

 

 

 

CAUTIONS WHEN USING ESSENTIAL OILS

 

Although essential oils act as a powerful form of natural medicine, sensible cautions are recommended. Seek the advice of a professional for clarity and support of a particular condition.  

 

Use caution during pregnancy and breast-feeding or while trying to become pregnant. It is NOT recommended to use essential oils undiluted during this time.

The use of undiluted oils is NOT recommended for children.

Avoid known allergy / sensitivity causing or skin irritating suspect essential oils.

Avoid prolonged use of the same essential oil.

Caution of sun exposure when using photosensitizing essential oils.

Avoid contact with the eyes and sensitive areas of the body.

Caution for those on heart medications.

Cautions for those scheduled for surgery, cease use of essential oil at least 2 weeks prior.

Generally, avoid excessive use of undiluted essential oils on the skin, unless indicated by a Health Professional.

Do not use essential oils internally, unless indicated by a Health Professional.

Essential oils are highly flammable substances and should be kept away from naked flames.

Store essential oils sensibly.

Keep all essential oils out of reach of children and pets.

 

With any resulting irritation, applications should be ceased.
